How Score-Based Follow-Ups Work
Instead of asking the same follow-up to everyone, Valerie branches based on the score they gave. Three score bands, three different follow-up paths.

Why this matters: A score of 3 needs empathetic “what went wrong?” phrasing. A score of 9 should celebrate success with “what did you love?” The same question to both feels tone-deaf and hurts response rates.
The Three Score Bands
Valerie groups responses into three bands. You configure which follow-up each band sees.
What low scores indicate

Improvement-focused. Ask what would make it better. These users know exactly what's missing.
What high scores indicate

- •Something about the experience was notably good

Celebratory, learning-focused. Ask what they liked to understand success factors and gather testimonial material.

Why Follow-Up Questions Fail (And How to Fix Them)
Common mistakes that tank follow-up completion rates—and what to do instead.
Too many follow-up questions
Why it fails: Users gave you their score—that was the ask. Each additional question reduces completion by 20-30%.
Fix: Limit to ONE follow-up question. If you need more, make them optional or use sampling.
Same follow-up for all scores
Why it fails: "What feedback do you have?" feels lazy after a score of 2, and confusing after a score of 10.
Fix: Use score-based branching. Match tone and question to the experience they just reported.
Only open-text follow-ups
Why it fails: Open-text requires more effort. Many users skip rather than type, especially on mobile.
Fix: Use single-select for low scores (categorize problems), open-text for mid/high where detail matters.
Generic question wording
Why it fails: "Any feedback?" gets generic responses or no response. Users don't know what you want.
Fix: Be specific: "What information was missing?" beats "Any feedback?" every time.
Mandatory follow-ups
Why it fails: Forced questions annoy users. Some just wanted to give a quick score.
Fix: Make follow-ups optional. Partial feedback (score only) is better than no feedback.

Why it fails: Hundreds of open-text responses are overwhelming. Nobody reads them all.

What score bands does Valerie support?
Valerie supports three score bands by default: Low (0-4), Mid (5-7), and High (8-10). These work for any 0-10 scale question including NPS. You configure which follow-up question each band sees.
Can I make follow-up questions optional?
Yes, and we recommend it. Making follow-ups optional increases the number of users who complete the initial score question. Some feedback is better than no feedback. Users who want to elaborate will.
Should I use open-text or multiple choice for follow-ups?
For low scores (0-4), single-select works well—you can categorize problems quickly. For mid and high scores, open-text often yields richer insights. You can also combine: single-select first, then optional open-text.
How does Valerie analyze open-text follow-up responses?
Valerie's AI automatically analyzes every open-text response for sentiment (positive/negative/neutral) and extracts themes. You get summaries showing common patterns without reading hundreds of individual responses.
Can I have different follow-ups for different pages?
Yes. Create separate survey configurations for different page types. Your pricing page can have pricing-specific follow-ups while your docs have documentation-specific ones. Each uses the same score-band logic.
What completion rate should I expect for follow-up questions?
Expect 60-80% of score-givers to complete a single, optional follow-up question. This drops to 40-60% if the follow-up is required, and drops further with each additional question. Keep it to one follow-up.
